St. Theresa of Lisieux junior boys Lions were given a scare in the finals, but bounced back to complete a championship season by winning two straight games to earn the York Region hockey title this week.

After going 8-0 in the regular season, the Lions were shocked in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship finals, losing 7-6 to Brother Andre. In Game 2 at Markham, the Lions evened up the series with a 5-2 win to force a Game 3. Back home at Elgin Barrow Arena Monday, the Lions weren’t about to be shocked again and put in a solid effort to win the game 5-3 and take the 2008 title.

The Lions got to the finals by beating Sir William Mulock Secondary 6-2 in the semi-finals and Huron Heights 7-3 in the quarter-finals.

The team finished with a 12-1 record on the season, including the playoffs.

Ferrari headed to world

York Region’s two Gillians are making a return trip to next month’s women’s world hockey championship.

Gilian Apps of Unionville and Thornhill’s Gillian Ferrari were named to the 20-woman roster that will defend its title in Harbin, China, from April 4 to 12.

Canada has 17 players returning from the team that won gold at the 2007 championships in Manitoba.

The team will be led by two-time Olympic gold medallist Hayley Wickenheiser. Apps, Ferrari, Sarah Vaillancourt, Jayna Hefford and Jennifer Botterill have one Olympic gold each.

Apps, the granddaughter of hockey legend Syl Apps, plays for the Brampton Canadette-Thunder while Ferrari’s club team is the Calgary Oval X-Treme.

Apps, 24, played at Dartmouth College on scholarship. Ferrari, 27, attended Seneca College.

Canada will open the tourney April 4 against Russia.

TSN will televise three games from the worlds, including the gold medal final April 12.
